False Creek - a residential waterfront in Vancouver, BC.

 

A waterfront scene from Vancouver, Canada in June 2007, of an area known as False Creek:  It's actually a short inlet which confused an early hydrographic surveyor.  Despite looking office-ish, the building at the front-left ("1000 Beach") is full of fancy apartments.

The contrasting building styles caught my eye in Calgary in early July 2007.  The building in the middle is the Chinese United Church and Chinese gymnasium.

 Pictured in June 2007, this is outside the Vancouver Art Gallery in Canada, with Hotel Vancouver in the background.   Many other pictures in the internet show the steps covered in people:  they look like a great place to sit and watch the world go by. 

White Sails at Canada Place

 

Another view of Vancouver's Canada Place ferry terminal + convention centre in June 2007  This is one part of the roof constructed to look like white sails  (actually made from fiberglass and teflon coated sheets, stretched across steel cables and are supported by 40-ft steel masts).

 I photographed this building in Vancouver, Canada in June 2007. 

It's a fascinating mix of cruise ship terminal, hotel and convention/trade centre.  In 2026, the internet says it was designed to resemble a massive ship, although I'm not sure I recognised it as that  when I snapped.

Just a carpark

I snapped this carpark in Canada (somewhere near Banff?) in June 2007.  In the moment, the sheer scale if it was impressive, with scow capped mountains that felt like they were right next door.

The Gastown Steam Clock, Vancouver

Built only in 1977, this is somehow a historic tourist attraction.  It “chimes” by sending up puffs of steam to the classic chock-chiming tune, every 15 minutes.

Vancouver Hostel, Jericho Beach

I stayed in this youth hostel I stayed at Jericho Beach in Vancouver in June 2007.

The building was an air force barracks in the 1930s, and with 4 beds in a dorm it had a very institutional feel. But the location made it a great place to stay, and gave easy access to some fabulous sunsets nearby as well as easy access to the city on public transport that just worked - remember this was before we got Google Maps on our phones!

In June 2007, I sat on a beach in Vancouver, and watched a beautiful sunset which was really intense, and towards the end created a sky full of pinks and purples.

Wizened sailor-status keeps on eye on the entrace to a tiny-ships museum

The wizened old sailor statue outside was full size and more, but inside everything was scaled down.

A ferry - for bicycles and pedestirans

These super-cute pontoon-style open-air, passenger and bicycle ferries ran along with classic water taxis in False Creek, Vancouver, designed to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians crossing the inlet.  Phtoographed in June 2007 - I'm not sure that I was brave enough to get on board.   But the pics of what amounts to a water-bus-stop in a wealthy marina are interesting.
